How Does A Pop
Pop-up drain plugs are arguably the most common bathtub stoppers in the market. These mechanical tools leverage a system of levers and links to move a drain plug up and down to create a watertight seal for the bathtub.
Anyone can operate a pop-up drain you dont need to be a plumbing expert. The device comes with a simple design and operates by the same lever on the overflow platelike in a trip-lever stopper.
When you press down on the center of the pop-up drain and twist it, the stopper will lock in place and allow water to drain out. If you want to open the drain, firmly push the center and twist it in the opposite direction.
How To Fix A Lift
A trip-lever drain stopper that uses a lift-bucket plunger can be identified by the absence of a pop-up stopper in the drain opening. When problems occur with this type of drain, it is for one of two reasons:
- The plunger has become stuck in the overflow tube and will not move up and down freely.
- The rod linking the trip lever to the plunger isn’t adjusted properly, creating a situation in which the lift bucket plunger doesn’t drop down enough to completely seal the drainpipe opening.

Any bathtub drain stopper that doesn’t do its job is an annoying inconvenience. Usually, the problem is easy to fix, though the procedures vary depending on what type of bathtub stopper you have. Some drains have stoppers that are spring-loaded, operated by a push of the toe or hand, while others use a trip-lever mounted on the bathtub’s overflow plate. A trip-lever drain stopper is more tricky than most to fix, due to its somewhat complicated mechanism.

Understanding How Bath Plugs Work
Sometimes referred to as a bath stopper, a bathtub plug works to prevent water in the tub from leaking through the drain hole. This simple device covers the hole above the bathtub drain, creating a watertight seal and allowing the tub to get filled.
You can shop for a variety of bathtub drain stoppers on the market, each featuring a unique style, size, and material. The most common bath plugs include lift-and-turn, trip-lever, push-and-pull, toe-touch, flip-it, and pop-up.
While all work slightly different from one another, they perform the same purposeretaining water in the bathtub for the desired time and allowing the tub to get emptied again.
Most plugs come equipped with a handle or pull chain that makes it easier to unplug when emptying your tub after a good soak.
Despite their durable nature, bathtub drain stoppers often wear and tear after many years of use. As a result, they end up failing to prevent water from escaping your bathtub. When this happens, you might need to invest in a replacement.
But in case of an emergency, there are several DIY methods you can try at home to keep water in your bathtub.
How To Fix A Sink Pop
Water may leak or refuse to drain around a sink pop-up for a number of reasons. If your sink pop-up wont pop up or seat properly, fixing it is quite easyusually just a matter of adjusting a few parts. The culprit is often a buildup of hair around the base of the stopper or the pivot rod mechanism. Or, the clevis may be out of adjustment .

You Have Clogged Drain Pipes
Of course, the most common reason why a bathtub wont drain is due to clogged pipes. Over time, nearly all bathtub drains will develop clogs. These are most commonly caused by a combination of:
- Shaving cream or gel
- Shampoo and conditioner suds
These mix with the water during a bath or shower and they can solidify in the drain. Sometimes even small items like shampoo bottle caps or razor shields will sneak through the drain openings.
If these clogs are located near the top of the drain opening, you may be able to unclog it on your own. You will likely need to unscrew the drain opening to pull up whatever is clogging it. However, this needs to be done with care, as you could accidentally push the clog further down the pipe.
How To Fix A Pop
A trip-lever drain that operates a pop-up stopper uses a slightly different mechanism. Rather than a lift-bucket plunger that seals a drain opening at the bottom of the overflow tube, there is a spring at the end of the connecting rod. This spring pushes down on a pivot arm that levers the pop-up stopper up into an open position when the trip lever is moved. When the trip lever is moved to the closed position, gravity allows the stopper to drop back down and seal the drain opening.
Problems with this type are usually evident when the pop-up stopper fails to push up enough to open the bathtub drainit wants to stay in the closed position constantly. This is usually because the connecting rod attached to the trip lever has become shortened from use.

How To Convert A Trip
Un-like Pop-up bathtub drain stoppers which are installed at the bottom of the tub, trip-lever bathtub stoppers are installed on the side of the bathtub. A toggle lever mounted on the overflow plate is connect to 2 link rods, which in return are connected to a plunger which is responsible for closing and opening the drain
When you flip the toggle lever up, the plunger falls to the junction of the overflow and bathtub drainpipe therefore blocking it, allowing the bathtub to fill. Flipping the lever down lifts off the plunger and the bathtub starts to drain.
A trip-lever bathtub stoppers plunger picks up hair, soap scum and debris from the drainpipe and that is why it gets stuck very often. Mineral deposits in the overflow drain also contribute to this problem.
At times the plunger disconnects/breaks off from the link rods and falls at the bottom of the overflow drain. In that case your bathtub cannot drain and fishing the plunger out is not always easy.
Replacing a trip-lever bathtub stopper with a pop-up stopper is always a good idea. Pop-up bathtub drain stoppers have fewer problems and when they do have a problem they are easier to fix than their trip-lever counterparts.

Install The New Overflow Cover Plate
A bathtub overflow plate is purely for cosmetic purposes. It prevents having the big overflow opening exposed which is somewhat ugly. It also prevents foreign substances from being through down the overflow pipe especially by kids.
Here is how to install it.
- Choose the right orientation. An overflow cover plate has a top and bottom side. The bottom side has a slot which allows excess water to flow down the overflow pipe preventing the house from flooding. Make sure that you get the orientation right.
- Align the 2 holes on the cover plate to the 2 holes on the bathtub and slide in the 2 screws. Tighten them in place using a screwdriver.
And basically that is how to convert a trip-lever bathtub stopper into a pop-up bathtub stopper. A plumber would charge you upwards of $80 to do it but by following this simple process you save yourself that amount.
How Do You Stop A Bathtub Overflow Drain
As the name suggests, a bathtub overflow drain prevents your tub from overflowing. It allows water to flow via the overflow drain instead of spilling on the floor.
However, most people often seal off the overflow drain to enjoy a full-body bathing experience. Overflowing also leaves behind debris and other unwanted stains that make your tub look ugly.
Fortunately, you can address this problem by getting an overflow drain cover from the hardware stores or a custom-made seal from your nearby plumbing shop.
Alternatively, you can replace the overflow drain with a waterproof sealant to prevent it from flowing outside. Keep in mind that this solution is more permanent, but you can always reinstall your original drain cover if the need arises.

What Should I Do If I Cant Unclog The Bathtub
Ultimately, it is best to have a professional unclog drains so the pipes do not get damaged. If you are unable to remove the clog yourself with hot water, a drain snake, or a plunger, avoid using other tactics as they could cause bigger issues.
Be sure your plumber specializes in both traditional plumbing service as well as drain cleaning. You may need to have your pipes thoroughly cleaned to remove additional build-up that could cause your drains to stop working in the near future.
A plumber will be able to use specialized tools to unclog safely without damaging your pipes. In some cases, portions of the piping may need to be removed or replaced if the clog is severe.
A professional plumber may also try hydro jetting to unclog the pipes. This involves using a high-powered water pressure machine to create a strong stream of water that will run through your pipes to quickly remove any blockages. This also helps to clean out the entire plumbing system, so you wont deal with any clogs in the near future.
In the mean-time, there are some other tips you can try to prevent your bathtub from clogging again. First, use drain covers in the shower or tub that will capture large items like clumps of hair or small pieces of plastic from going down the drain.
Cleaning up your tub regularly can help to prevent build-up from soap residue, dirt, sand, and other clogging culprits. Try to rinse out the shower after use and deep clean it regularly.
