Every homeowner knows how important it is to clean and maintain your systems and appliances. However, many homeowners don’t know that flushing a water heater every year can remove a build-up of sediment from the bottom of the tank. Flushing sediment can improve a water heater’s lifespan and efficiency. Sediment can create a barrier between the heating elements of the water heater and the water, making it harder to heat your home’s showers, dishwasher, and laundry. How Often Should You Drain Your Hot Water Heater
Its recommended that you flush your water heater at least once a year. It will help to prevent problems from coming to your home if you do that. The best way to get rid of sediment is to keep it out of the water.
This can be done by using a water softener, which is a device that allows water to flow through a filter to remove the sediment. If you do not have access to one of these devices, you can also use a garden hose to spray water on the area to be cleaned.

If you haven’t flushed your hot water tank in a number of years, you may be better off having a Licensed Plumber do it for you. You run the risk of activating leaks. It’s possible that the sediment that has been there for years has caused fissures in the bottom of the tank. The existing sediment is plugging those fissures but once you drain and flush the hot water tank, it could remove the sediment that is “sealing” the leaks.
Now I’m not suggesting that you shouldn’t drain your tank and I’m also not suggesting that if you haven’t flushed it in a number of years, you’re going to have a leak in your tank. By calling a Licensed Plumber to do the task, if it does leak, then you’ve got the right person on hand to deal with it.

A vacuum breaker is a device that is installed on a water heater to help prevent a vacuum from forming inside the tank. If a vacuum were to form, it could cause the tank to collapse, which would be a disaster.
A vacuum breaker is actually a very simple device. It consists of a valve that is connected to the water heaters cold water inlet. When the water heater is turned on, the valve opens and allows water to flow into the tank. However, if the water heater is turned off and the temperature inside the tank starts to drop, the valve will close and prevent water from flowing back into the tank. How Long Does It Take To Drain A 50 Gallon Hot Water Heater
Depending on how big the tank is, this can take 20 to 60 minutes. Dont damage or break the drain valve when you open and close it. Its never a good idea to force the valve open or closed. When the water has drained from the tank, turn on the cold water valve at the top of the tank and let it run for a few minutes.

Anon: water meter spinning argues that there’s a leak on the house side of the meter, or water is passing into the building and maybe a toilet is running Yet you see “zero water” – you can start checking by turning off water at the main and looking at the meter to see if it stops also if there are shutoffs that isolate different building areas those can narrow down the problem.
Finally, if the new water shutoff valve was installed using soldering and too much solder was pushed into a joint that could have blocked the valve. And of course, Make sure the valve is opened in the right direction.

Can You Drain A Hot Water Heater By Running Hot Water
If possible, run hot water upstairs from a nearby tap. The hot water can be drained from the tank and the pressure in the system can be alleviated. Make sure the water is flowing out of the faucet by opening the drain valve. If it is not flowing, you may need to add more water.
If you do not have access to an upstairs bathroom, or if you are not comfortable with the idea of using a toilet in your home, it may be a good idea to use a portable toilet. Portable toilets can be purchased at most hardware stores, and they are inexpensive and easy to install. They can also be rented for a few dollars a day.
Turn Off The Water Heater And Water Supply
First, youll need to switch off the cold-water supply valve on your water heater. Atop the water heater, youll see a water pipe and a shutoff valve going into the heater. Turn this valve to shut off the water to the tank. You may need to turn off the water where the main supply line enters your house in older homes.
If your water heater is gas, position the thermostat on pilot. If your heater is electric, shut the power off your homes electrical panel. The correct fuse or circuit breaker should be labeled as being connected to the water heater.
As a precaution, its a good idea to let your water heater sit a while, so the water in the tank has the chance to cool down.

Electric Home Water Heater
If there is dirt water coming from your hot water taps but your cold water taps are clear, you may need to flush out your hot water tank. If so, these instructions will generally apply to hot water tanks properly installed within the last 10-15 years. If you have ANY problems following these instructions, you should contact a plumber to help you in flushing your hot water tank.
