    Check The Pump Housing

Now you should be able to see the drain pump, the internal drain hose, and the bottom of the washer tub. Its time to start hunting for that sock-clog. Start by looking in the drain pump housing, which is often translucent. You may even be able to see whatevers in there. Disconnect the drain hose, ready to catch any water with a towel. Then clamp the drain hose for now.

If something is caught in the drain pump, youll need to unhook the belt from the drain pulley underneath. Grasp the clogging item with your needle-nose pliers and twist the pulley to unwind the item from the drain assembly. Pull the clogging item out from the top of the pump, where the drain hose was connected.

Procedure To Fix A Bad Maytag Drain Pump

Replacing the pump is pretty easy, 3 screws and 2 hose clamps. Follow these steps to replace the drain pump.

    First, unplug the washer.

Turn off both the hot and cold water supply.

Move the washer to a location where you can get at the back of it. Here I have tipped the unit up in order to see the pumps underneath. The pump on the left is the drain pump that we will be repacing .

If your washer is still full of water , then you will need to drain the water out. Tip the unit forward slightly so you can get under it . Then use a pliers or vise grips to remove the pipe clamp connected to the bottom of the tub and going to the pump, as shown below.

    Slide the clamp down.

Pull the rubber hose off of the tub.

ATTENTION! water will start flooding out of the tub . Use a drain pan, or be positioned over a floor drain for this step!

Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry open the plastic cover that houses the electrical connection. There are 2 plastic tabs, one on each side. It doesnt matter if you break these off, since you will be replacing it anyway.

Press the tab on the electrical connector while pulling it out to disconnect it.

Next, remove the three 5/16 socket-head screws that hold the pump in place.

Here is a view of the old pump and new drain pump side by side for comparison.

The new pump comes with the short rubber hose. Take the old hose clamp off of the old one, and slip it onto the new one.

Do the same for the upper drain hose.

    Youre all set!

How To Replace The Drain Pump On A Maytag Neptune Washer

If you’re getting the “ND” — no drain — error code on your Maytag Neptune washer, the first thing to check is the drain hose behind the machine it could be blocked by lint or even an old sock. If it the hose is clear, the problem probably has something to do with the drain pump inside the machine housing. To access it, you need to remove the cover from the back of the machine. The pump can also get clogged, but you may discover that the impellers are broken. If so, it’s a straightforward task to replace the pump.

  • 1.

Unplug the washing machine and shut off the water supply valves. Pull the machine far enough away from the wall so there’s room for you to work comfortably behind it. You may need to unhook the water hoses — if so, use adjustable pliers to loosen the connectors.

  • 2.

Remove the back panel by unscrewing the screws that hold it with a Phillips screwdriver. You should find two screws — one on either side of the panel. After removing the screws, slide the panel up to remove it.

  • 3.

Locate the drain pump on the bottom of the machine to the left. It has two drain hoses connected to it with pipe clamps. Pull off the electrical connector.

  • 4.

Unscrew the clamp holding the hose that leads from the washer tub to the pump. Pull off the hose and direct it into a 2-gallon or larger bucket to catch water that hasn’t drained. Once all the water has drained out, remove the second hose in the same way.
