How To Clean Out Your Condensate Drain

Condensate Drain Traps & Lines Cleaned on AC and Gas Furnace!

Turn off the power to your HVAC system at the breaker and the thermostat.

Find the condensate pan. It may be located directly under the indoor air handler in your attic or utility closet. It may be covered by a removable access panel.

If there is standing water in the condensate pan, your drain line is probably clogged. Use a rag or wet/dry shop vacuum to remove the water.

Clean the pan with soap and water.

Find the condensate drain outlet which might be located outside your house near the foundation. Many times the clogged drain can be cleared with wet/dry vacuum suction. You can also try removing the clog with a plumbers snake.

Try to identify the access point on the drain line which might be a T-shaped vent with a PVC cover. Remove the cover and inspect the drain for debris. /

Use the access port to flush the drain with white vinegar, diluted hydrogen peroxide, or hot water and a drop of dish soap. Do not use bleach because it kills plants, and damages plastics and siding. Allow the solution to soften remaining debris for about 30 minutes. Flush the drain again with water and verify the water is draining freely.

Horizontal Unit Drain Trap Location

A horizontal unit is installed on its side. It is often set up in places with limited space, such as an attic. In these units, air moves from side to side instead of up and down.

Thus, the evaporator coils are located beside the furnace or air handler near the return air ducts. The condensate pan is sandwiched between the evaporator coils above and the drain trap below.

Water Under Furnace In Winter

In most cases, the furnace leaking water in winter is due to humidifier problems.

The humidifier is installed into the plumbing system and connected to the furnace. The equipment has water constantly moving through it, helping add moisture to air in your home to make it more comfortable.

If the humidifier gets clogged or broken, water will start dripping. Thats why you will notice water under the furnace. So, its the humidifier leaking, not the furnace.

Follow the steps mentioned above when you notice the leak, only this time its the humidifier you will check for clogs or breakage. If its the case, you will have to purchase a new one and install it.

The great news is this doesnt necessarily require you to hire a professional if you have already identified the cause of the leak and can repair it yourself.

If there is water in your furnace or on the floor, then its almost always because the drain line is clogged.

To unclog your drain line, follow these steps:

Check to see how bad the clog is. Take a look in your drain pan and outside where the drain line goes to see if it is something simple to fix. Sometimes, it will just be some minor blockage outside that needs to be cleared.

Remove the clog by hand. If the clog is near the surface, poke your finger in the drain line to dislodge any debris and clear the clog.

Use a drain brush or drain snake. You can use a drain flexible brush or snake up your line to unclog debris from the middle of your line. Using a drain brush will also scrub the inside walls of your drain line. This helps prevent clogs from re-forming in the future.
