If you swim quite a lot, you can get custom made earplugs.
• Use ear drops that prevent water from becoming trapped in the ears. You will need to place the eardrops in the ear canal before entering the water. The eardrops have certain properties which leave a waterproof coating in the canal. This limits the risk of otitis externa or swimmers ear as a result of water being stuck in the canal.
• You can also wear a swim cap while you are swimming or a shower cap while in the shower. These caps can be used to cover the ears and prevent water from entering.

What Causes Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

The most common cause of Eustachian tube dysfunction is when the tube become swollen and mucus or fluid builds up. This can be caused by a cold, the flu, a sinus infection, or allergies. Some people are at greater risk for Eustachian tube dysfunction. They include:

• Children. Their tubes are shorter and straighter than those of an adult. This makes it easier for germs to reach the middle ear and for fluid to become trapped there. Also, childrens immune systems are not fully developed. This makes it harder for them to fight off infections.

• Turn your blow dryer on the lowest setting and blow it toward your ear. Hold it at least a foot away.
• Try over-the-counter drying drops.
• To make drying drops at home, mix 1 part white vinegar to 1 part rubbing alcohol. Pour 1 teaspoon of the solution into each ear tilt your head and let it drain out.

Tugging on the earlobe and shaking your head should help water flow out of the ear canal, or you can create a vacuum with the palm of your hand. • Oral differences that can occur with Down syndrome or cleft palate
• Rarely, surgeries that cut across the auditory tube

Anyone can get fluid in their ears. However, it’s much more likely to occur in children because their auditory tubes are small.

Children’s tubes also run in a more horizontal direction than adults, which can encourage fluid to pool in the ear.

OME is one of the most common reasons that children get fluid in their ears. There are about 2.2 million cases of OME in the United States each year. About 90 out of 100 children will get fluid in their ears at some point before they are 5 or 6 years old.

What If My Ear Infection Doesnt Go Away After Antibiotics

If you or your child finish your course of antibiotics, but it seems like the ear infection hasnt gone away, make an appointment with your doctor. Theyll help figure out whats going on and what to do next. Theres a chance that your doctor may prescribe a different type of antibiotic to see if it works better.

Its also possible that the infection is gone but the symptoms arent. This can happen if theres still fluid trapped in the ear, causing a plugged-up feeling, pain or hearing loss. Most of the time the fluid in ears drains within a couple of weeks, but sometimes it sticks around longer.
