Wondering How To Get Fluid Out Of Your Ear Read On

Ear aches and infection are common side effects of basic ear, nose, and throat illnesses. If you get an ear infection one common symptom is fluid in the middle ear. Other causes for fluid in your middle ear could be allergies, sinus infections, viral infections, and even acid reflux. As your earache and infection subsides the fluid doesnt always leave the middle ear. The inflammation from the ear infection often causes the lining of the eustachian tube to swell shut – this can cause your ear to feel clogged. If you know how to drain fluid from middle ear at home you can avoid a trip to the doctor, sometimes you will need a simple prescription. Other times, surgical intervention is needed.

How to Drain an Inner Ear Infection

Most symptoms of eustachian tube dysfunction are mild and get better on their own within a few days. If your eustachian tubes are blocked, swallowing, chewing gum, or yawning can help clear them.

If your symptoms persist or if youre having pain, make an appointment with your healthcare provider. They can figure out why your ears are blocked and recommend the best treatment.

They might suggest you try a few treatments to reduce nasal congestion and clear the middle ear of drainage, such as:

Alternative medicine practitioners often recommend using eustachian tube massage as a natural way to help ear congestion drain. You press your fingers behind and below your ear lobe and gently massage the area by pulling your fingers down.

Some people might find eustachian tube massage helpful for symptoms, but there has not been a lot of research to prove that it works to clear up a blockage or treat eustachian tube dysfunction.

    How Do You Treat Otorrhea

Otorrhea treatment focuses on the cause of ear drainage. For example, if otorrhea is the result of a bacterial infection in your middle ear, your healthcare provider will likely prescribe antibiotics. Your provider will likely treat outer ear infections with antibiotic ear drops.

If you have a ruptured eardrum, it may heal on its own in a few weeks. But some people need surgery to close the hole.

If the cause isnt immediately determined, your provider may refer you to a specialist. People who have chronic ear infections may need to see an otolaryngologist . If head trauma is a suspected cause, your provider will likely refer you to a neurosurgeon for further evaluation and treatment.

Preventing Water From Getting Trapped In Your Ears

There are many things you can do to prevent water from entering or getting trapped in your ears. Especially if you are a regular swimmer, often get water trapped in your ears in the shower, or have middle ear problems and need to keep your ears dry.

    • Silicone earplugs can be inserted before entering the water, e.g. before taking a shower or a swim. They perfectly fit into the ear canal and block any water from entering the ears, keeping them dry. This will prevent water from becoming trapped in the ears and infections from occurring. If you swim quite a lot, you can get custom made earplugs.
    • Use ear drops that prevent water from becoming trapped in the ears. You will need to place the eardrops in the ear canal before entering the water. The eardrops have certain properties which leave a waterproof coating in the canal. This limits the risk of otitis externa or swimmers ear as a result of water being stuck in the canal.
    • You can also wear a swim cap while you are swimming or a shower cap while in the shower. These caps can be used to cover the ears and prevent water from entering.

    What Causes Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

The most common cause of Eustachian tube dysfunction is when the tube become swollen and mucus or fluid builds up. This can be caused by a cold, the flu, a sinus infection, or allergies. Some people are at greater risk for Eustachian tube dysfunction. They include:

    • Children. Their tubes are shorter and straighter than those of an adult. This makes it easier for germs to reach the middle ear and for fluid to become trapped there. Also, childrens immune systems are not fully developed. This makes it harder for them to fight off infections.
    • People who smoke. Smoking damages the cilia . This can allow mucus to gather in the tubes.
    • People who are obese. Fatty deposits around the tubes can lead to Eustachian tube dysfunction.

    • Unbearable pain in the ear
    • Swelling or inflammation in the ear
    • Loss of hearing or ringing in the ears
    • Your ear doesnât stop draining even after a few days or weeks of trying natural remedies.

Fortunately, home remedies for ear drainage, be it acute or mild, are effective. Ingredients like apple cider vinegar, neem oil, garlic, and holy basil help combat pathogens in the ear and treat the infection.
