Clean Or Change The Pivot Rod
If you see that the pivot rod is fine, just clean it thoroughly with water and detergent. This indicates that the problem is with the drain stopper itself. But if the pivot rod is defected or rusted, then you need to change it with a new one. Make sure the new pivot rod is of the same length, and you select the same ball size, or you may encounter a problem fitting it back.
Now, attach the right sized ball with the pivot rod and set it aside for now.
How To Clear The Blockage
After cleaning your pop-up stopper in a different sink, use a bent wire hanger to clear any hair and gunk out of the pipes. Lower the hook-shaped wire into the drain and rotate it until you feel something on the end. Then pull up and use gloved hands to throw away anything you pull up. You can also pull hair and other blockages through the pivot rod hole.
Use an old toothbrush to clean the inside of the pipe and around the drain. If using a hanger doesnt clear the clog, you may need to remove the P-trap from under the sink and hand-clean it.

Restore And Test The Pivot Rod
Take the cleaned or new pivot rod with the ball attached, and insert it back inside the tailpiece where it was before. When you move the pivot in an up-down motion after inserting it, the drain stopper should also move along with it. If that is not the case, it means you need to readjust the drain stopper till the rod goes into the stopper hole, and it moves accordingly.
How To Fix A Bathroom Sink Stopper
Your bathroom sink stopper works hard to stop objects from falling down your drain. But when you pull the knob that controls it and nothing happens, it can be frustrating. Just like when you’re brushing your teeth and no amount of pushing will lift it. The good news is theres a simple fix that you can do to get your stopper working again in seconds.
Below youll find a simple explanation of how your sink stopper works and how to fix it when it doesnt. After reading, youll have everything you need if you want to tackle the job yourself.
Tools Needed: a set of pliers
HOW IT WORKS
The stopper in your bathroom sink connects to the knob at the back of your sink fixture by a simple lever. The knob has a bar that runs down under the sink, connected to a strap by a retaining screw. That strap slips over a lever where a clip holds it in place. Finally, the lever sits in the drain body and hooks into the stopper. Pulling the knob lifts the back of that lever, lowering the stopper. Pushing the knob down will lower the lever, lifting the stopper back up.
LET’S FIX IT
Over time, the retaining screw holding the knob to the strap can come loose. That lets the bar slide up and down without moving the lever or stopper. So, all you have to do is tighten the retaining screw to get it working again. Align the strap so the stopper is where you want it when the knob is down, then tighten the screw to hold it in place. You may need a set of pliers to get the screw tight enough to hold.

How To Reassemble And Adjust The Pop Up Stopper
How To Adjust A Pop
If all you need to do is adjust your stopper because it is too tight or too loose, you dont have to remove the stopper. All youll need to do is get under the sink and adjust the pivot rod by squeezing the spring clip and inserting the pivot rod into the next highest hole. Raise or lower it hole by hole until you reach the perfect adjustment.
If the stopper still wont sit correctly, try loosening the clevis screw and adjusting the lift rod.
Still, its a good idea to regularly remove and clean the pop-up stopper. The sluggishness could also be caused by hair and gunk trapped in the pipes and stopper mechanism.

Most of us take our sink pop-up stopper for granteduntil it stops working properly. Then we get that sinking feeling, and nobody wants that, especially in our houses bathroom.
Fortunately, help is on the way, thanks to Alure Home Improvements Chief Operating Officer Doug Cornwell and this latest installment of the 60 Second Fix: How To Adjust The Pop Up In Your Sink In 60 Seconds.
As Cornwell points out, the pop-up stopper basically serves two functions.
One is to keep water in the sink, the other is to let the water out, he says.
Generally, there are two common problems with this device, Cornwell says: One is that the pop-up doesnt stay up so it continually falls down. The other is that it doesnt pop up high enough.
The pop-up stopper is the knobbed rod on the sink that goes through the water faucet. When you lift it upwards, the mechanism that its attached to the under the sink pulls the stopper down onto the drain, forming a tight seal. And when you push the rod back down, it opens the drain stopper, letting the water out.
Of course, in order to do these fixes simply, you have to take some elementary steps first. Move everything from under the sink so you have enough room to maneuver.
Make sure that the horizontal pivot rod, which is attached to the sinks drain pipe, is connected to the clevis, a flat piece of metal that connects to the vertical stopper rod and has four holes lined up vertically for one end of the horizontal pivot rod to go through.

How To Remove The Sink Pop
Consider putting on rubber gloves for this. You may also need a flashlight. If you need to remove the sink stopper to clear a drain, wear gloves and be prepared for a messy and smelly experience.
- First, remove everything from underneath the sink so you have room to work.
- Next, place a bucket or some kind of container underneath the piping right beneath the sink.
- Then, raise the lift rod so the stopper closes all the way to form a tight seal.
- Get underneath the sink and look where your pivot rod is connected to the clevis strap. Disconnect the pivot rod from the clevis strap by squeezing the two end of the spring clip together and sliding it out. If you cannot do it with your hands, use a pair of pliers.
- Once the pivot rod is disconnected, you can free the pivot rod from the stopper by hand. Make sure a basin is beneath the pipes so water doesnt go everywhere when you remove the ball seal.
- Now that the pivot rod is unhooked from the stopper, you should be free to pull it out.
Warning: Do not turn the water on! With the stopper and pivot rod removed, water will flow out of the hole and all over the place. If you want to clean the stopper mechanism or pivot rod, use a different sink.
Remove And Inspect The Pivot Rod
After youve assessed the condition of your stopper, youll then want to remove and inspect the horizontal pivot rod as well. Pull the pivot rod out of the sink drain pipe in order to examine it carefully. When you remove the rod, you should notice the small white ball on the pivot rod. The other side of the white ball attaches to the drain plug. If the pivot rod is rusted, the connection to the plug can start to come loose, resulting in a plug that wont stay up or down. Sometimes, it can be due to crud thats accumulated around the seal ball. Either way, youll need to remove the pivot rod.
To remove the rod, remove the spring clip that connects the pivot rod to the clevis. The spring clip looks like a piece of bent metal that youll need to squeeze and slide off the rod. When the spring clip has been removed, youll need to determine if you need to replace your pivot rod. If so, make sure you choose the right ball size and pivot rod length from the repair kit.

How To Fix A Pop
A trip-lever drain that operates a pop-up stopper uses a slightly different mechanism. Rather than a lift-bucket plunger that seals a drain opening at the bottom of the overflow tube, there is a spring at the end of the connecting rod. This spring pushes down on a pivot arm that levers the pop-up stopper up into an open position when the trip lever is moved. When the trip lever is moved to the closed position, gravity allows the stopper to drop back down and seal the drain opening.
Problems with this type are usually evident when the pop-up stopper fails to push up enough to open the bathtub drainit wants to stay in the closed position constantly. This is usually because the connecting rod attached to the trip lever has become shortened from use.
