Reasons Why Maytag Washer Not Draining Lets Fix It
We all know that Maytag washers are some of the most reliable washing machines on the market. However, if your Maytag washer not draining, get your hands dirty and follow our troubleshooting guide to fix it.
The Maytag washer is one of the most popular brands of washing machines around the country. With their long history of making quality appliances, its no wonder so many people choose Maytag washers. However, these machines will experience problems over time. One common problem with the Maytag washer is that it wont drain. This can be frustrating to people who want to get back to their everyday routine.
Below, we will discuss a few simple solutions that you can try out to fix the Maytag washer drain issue. One of these steps should resolve your problem with no further hassles.
It Works Hard On Your Toughest Stains
With a great cost per cycle, this machine wont drive up your water bill, but it will effectively and efficiently clean clothes especially during its normal and heavy cycles.
Maytag touts that this washer has the toughest cleaning performance on the market, and we were, in fact, impressed by how hard it works. The Normal/Regular, Delicates, and Heavy Duty cycles performed above average. The normal cycle had a 73.06% performance against the average of 71.8% and the delicates cycle had a 70.59% versus the average of 67.1%.
The heavy cycle did an astounding job with an 82.95% performance, which soars above the average and is a tad below our maximum performance measurement of 84.3%.
These cycle measurements were taken without using the Extra Power button, meaning this washing machine will work hard regardless of its extra features.
Maytag Centennial Washer Not Spinning Fast Enough What To Try
Now, if it will spin slowly , then chances are you have an unbalanced load.
That being so, the first thing to try is redistributing your clothes.
Also, check if the washer is leveled properly
Another spinning/sensing-related issue is when it starts to make a loud noise like it wants to take off when it first starts to sense and then every time it is spinning.
If this is what your machine is doing, it is very likely due to bad bearings and you will be better off buying new ones .
But if it is making high pitch whirring sounds, you may want to check the wash plate plus the plastic splutch wheel .
Quick Note: In case of terrible noises, it is always worth checking underneath the machine . Sometimes that will rub on the bottom of plastic protective housing and cause awful noises.

What To Do If Maytag Centennial Washer Wont Spin
The first thing is to keep your head cool and have a deep breath. People dont avoid this washer brand for such simple problems.
Also, dont worry about the sopping wet clothes for now. Everything will work out great.
I will start from a very basic inspection . Gradually, I will move to more difficult parts. Follow this troubleshooting guide and solve the spin problems:
The extra load will cause your Maytag Centennial washer not to spin. You may have seen it before, jammed clothes can make any washer spinless. This is the most common cause of that particular problem.
This is why it happens
Extra-large clothes will end up on one side of the drum and create such problems. There could be jammed clothing outside the drum too.
Remove some clothes from the drum or outside the drum and run the spin cycle again. If it does not solve the problem, check the next tips.
- Broken Motor Coupling
It connects the motor and transmission and thats how the washer drum gets the power to function. So, if its broken or failed somehow, the spin cycle of your washer wont be working.
If the washer repeatedly goes through heavy loads, the motor coupling may fail prematurely and damaged permanently. If its damaged, you need to replace it.
- Clogged Drain Hose
If the drain hose is clogged, it wont spin or rinse. To be sure, take off the drain hose from the back of the washer. Now, run water through the hose to make sure its not clogged.
- Faulty Lid Switch
Inspect the lid switch carefully
How To Replace The Pump
Buy a new one to match.
- You can find a new pump by searching for your washing machines brand and model number online.
- Pro tip: Model numbers are usually stamped on a small metal plate located under the tub lid or on the top, side or back of the machine. Copy down all the plate information and use it to access online parts suppliers, or take it along to the parts distributor.

Two: Check The Drive Belt
A drive belt connects the transmission to the motor, and you can find it underneath your Maytag Bravos washer. Once emptied and unplugged, tilt your washer until it is lying on its front panel.
Remove the shield from the bottom of the appliance and check if the belt is loose or broken. You can attempt to tighten it if loose, but you need to replace it if it is broken.
Why Is My Washer Draining But Not Spinning
Your washer is draining but not spinning because something is wrong with the load. It could be that the laundry load is too much or out of balance, making it hard for the washer to spin.
It could also be that the washer is unstable or that one major component such as the control board, drive belt, motor coupling, bearing, or clutch is worn and defective.

Remove And Check The Drain Hose
Behind the washer, you will find the drain hose. Its connected to the appliance at one end while the other goes into a drain pipe that leads out of your house. First, verify that the hose isnt pinched or kinked anywhere, then pull the hose out of the pipe and inspect it for clogs.
If you find any debris, you should most definitely remove it. Then, set everything back up, turn the water and electricity back on and try starting your washer again. If the clog was the problem, it should now drain. If it still doesnt drain, or if you didnt find a clog, then make sure the power and water supply are shut off again before proceeding to the next step.
Direct Drive Motor Coupling
If the mere name of this part has you searching for your owners manual, likely, you shouldnt tackle this repair yourself. The direct drive motor coupling is used on some top-load and front-load machines instead of a belt drive. Its main purpose is to transfer power from the motor to the transmission. As it wears, the coupling will slip and eventually fail to engage the drive forks that allow the basket to agitate or spin.
This diagnosis and repair will require removing the cabinet to access the direct drive motor coupling, so contact your repairman soon.

The Lid Switch Isn’t Working Properly
The lid switch determines whether the lid is closed properly and, as a safety feature, is designed to keep your washer from spinning if not. While on most models the washer won’t spin at all if the lid switch isn’t working, some models will allow the washer to fill but not spin.
If you’re dealing with a top-loading washer not spinning, an impaired lid switch is one of the most common causes and should be one of the first things you check, especially if your issue is a top-loading washer that fills and agitates, but doesn’t spin properly. You can find the lid switch underneath the lid, on the top of your machine. Check to see if it makes good contact, or if it’s bent. You may be able to bend the switch back into shape, or you may need to have it replaced. There are many steps and it’s pertinent that you use the correct replacement part, so we recommend reaching out to a washing machine repair professional for help.
Drain Hose Is Kinked Or Clogged
The drain hose connects your washer to the drain pipe, allowing used water to exit the washer drum. A hose thats kinked or clogged by lint or debris causes a washing machine not to drain because water cant bypass the blockage. This often results in puddles in the washer drum or leaking.
To remove any kinks, disconnect the hose clamp at the washer and gently straighten the hose. The hose must also be unclamped to assess any blockages inside. If the blockage cant be removed via one end, the hose may need to be unclamped at the drain pipe to remove the clog. Damage or blockages that cant be cleared means the hose must be replaced.

Drain Manually If Needed
If you have deduced that the issue is most likely still a clog in the drain hose that you were unable to easily access, you will need to remove the drain hose from the machine to thoroughly inspect it.
Before doing this, however, you need to manually empty your machine. Otherwise, the water will spill out when you disconnect the hose. While an unpleasant process, the mess can be kept to a minimum if you make use of buckets and towels.
Four: Level The Appliance
If your washer is not standing level on the floor, the spinning mechanism could get off-kilter and eventually may stop. Therefore, check the floor levels and move the washer to a more even surface. Better yet, adjust each individual leg until the washer is perfectly level.
If the machine is on a pedestal, make sure that it is not tilting to one side.

Check To See If It Will Drain With The Help Of Gravity
Find a large bucket, place it on the floor and place the end of the drain hose into the bucket. If theres no clog, the water should drain on its own owing to gravity. At this point, you can be fairly certain there are no clogs in the hose, and the problem is either related to the inner workings of the machine the drain pump, a belt, the lid switch, etc. or a clog in the drain pipe.
If your machine doesnt drain when you put the hose in the bucket, then the issue is still most likely a clog somewhere deeper in the hose that you cant see.

Faulty Lid Switch Assembly
A Maytag washer that doesnt drain could be due to a problem with the lid switch, which will only allow the spin cycle to operate if its fully closed.
Try closing and opening the lid again, just to make sure it is fully activated.
Another way to troubleshoot this issue is by taking apart the machine and testing the switch with a multimeter if it doesnt have continuity and needs replacing.
Was A Gentle Or Delicate Cycle Or Low Spin Speed Selected
Gentle cycles, such as gentle, delicate, or handwash, use slow spins to keep fabrics from stretching and wrinkling. Slow spinning also leaves more water in the load. To remove more water, select a cycle that uses high spin speeds. A cycle or fabric selection such heavy duty or super has higher spin speeds and will leave less water in loads. Always follow your clothing care label to determine what cycle to use that is best for the garments being washed.

Resetting A Maytag Washer That Is Coin Operated
If the Maytag washer you are having problems with is a commercial coin-operated machine, the method of reset can be slightly different.
The following steps can be used to reset a Maytag coin-operated washer with an LED display:
- To first activate program mode on the washer, unlock the lockbox.
- Locate the Delicates and Knits option on the LED display. This mode can be found in the washing options menu.
- For five seconds, keep pressing the Delicates and Knits button. The washers LED display should begin to blink and flash, indicating that the error codes have been eliminated and the washer has been reset.
- Run a test load in your washer to confirm that the reset was successful.
Hopefully, following the above methods has enabled you to reset your Maytag washer. If the issue is still not solved, it is possible the culprit is a problem with a control board, which will almost certainly require a qualified technician to solve.
The Extra Power Setting Doesnt Add Much Power
Maytag advertises that the MHW5630HW offers the “most powerful cleaning in the industry driven by the Heavy Duty cycle with Extra Power button.” Of course, we tested this claim.
Our data shows that the Heavy Duty cycle is pretty powerful on its own. Without the Extra Power setting added to it, the Heavy Duty cycle had a cleaning performance of 82%, which soars above the performance average of 77% and just under the maximum performance of 84%.
How much oomph could the Extra Power setting add? Turns out, it doesn’t add anything. When we tested the Heavy Duty cycle and added on the Extra Power option, the cycle only had a 77.5% performance. This is disappointing considering that adding on this setting decreased the performance of the Heavy Duty cycle, but increased the actual cycle time it took to wash the clothes.
Whats more is that during our tests, the Heavy Duty cycle with Extra Power added used 20% more water, but 20% less hot water. The extra water can dilute the detergent, therefore hindering its ability to fight stains. A decrease in hot water usage also decreases stain fighting particularly on oil and blood stains.
These test results demonstrate that the Extra Power setting detracts from, rather than adds to, its value.

Prop Up The Washer Front
The next step is interesting, you may not have heard of this one before. Lift up the front of your washing machine and place two paint cans underneath, one under each front foot. If youre not fixing a Maytag and your drain is behind the back panel, tip it the other direction and look up the steps to open that panel instead. You may need the help of a friend for this part.

Check The Pump Housing
Now you should be able to see the drain pump, the internal drain hose, and the bottom of the washer tub. Its time to start hunting for that sock-clog. Start by looking in the drain pump housing, which is often translucent. You may even be able to see whatevers in there. Disconnect the drain hose, ready to catch any water with a towel. Then clamp the drain hose for now.
If something is caught in the drain pump, youll need to unhook the belt from the drain pulley underneath. Grasp the clogging item with your needle-nose pliers and twist the pulley to unwind the item from the drain assembly. Pull the clogging item out from the top of the pump, where the drain hose was connected.
Tip #: Check For Jammed Clothes
One common cause why a Maytag top load washer wont spin is due to an uneven load or jammed clothing.
Larger items or loads tend to settle on one side of the washer drum during a cycle. Try to redistribute the load or remove a few articles of clothing and run the spin cycle on your washer again.
If this doesnt help, check outside the washer drum for jammed clothing and remove them.

Seven: Check The Stator
The stator, along with the rotor, are both responsible for the strong electromagnetic field that allows the tub to spin. Specifically, check the windings in the stator to determine its state.
If there is significant damage, you need to replace the stator. As with the rotor, you can only access the stator by dismantling the bottom of your washer.
Check The Washer For Excessive Sudsing
Find out if theres excessive sudsing because if there is, you are likely to get draining or spinning faults.
The long-term solution for this is to always measure the detergent according to the manufacturers directions .
Please note that generally, you need to add less detergent if you use very soft water when it comes to this type of washers.
