Plant Pot With Drain Hole

Should I Repot Monstera After Buying

How to Make a Drainage Hole in a Plant Pot Without a Drill

No, you may not need to repot your Monstera plant after buying it. Repotting is stressful for your plant, so you dont want to do it unnecessarily.

As long as the plant looks healthy and its planted in a well-draining potting mix, it will be fine without repotting.

However, do check the bottom of the growers pot to see if roots are growing out of the holes. You dont want the drainage holes to be clogged.

Or, if the soil seems compacted or dry, then you may want to go ahead and repot it right away with better a potting soil mix.

Self Watering And Self Aerating Pots For Orchids

Some pots will clog and stop working. When using the self-watering and self-aerating bank, no more troublesome. This pot’s design incorporates an integrated self-watering feature. Refilling the pool is easy as compared to the other pots. The planter has a watering attachment that will enable you to water the plants since pouring the water directly into the planter may lead to overflowing.

Buying the pot could be beneficial since you may keep it in your house. It has an integrated deep reservoir dish with studs on the bottom, making it easy to lift the floor planter. Further, it prevents the circular water stains caused by other pots. Moreover, these pots feature UV-resistant pigments, making them the best pots for growing orchids outdoors and indoors.

Pros

  • The studs may be weak hence the pot will fall.
  • It is expensive, and so not many people will afford it.

Choosing A Pot With Several Small Drainage Holes

Some pots are made with several small drainage holes instead of just one larger hole. This does a good job of keeping the soil in the pot while still allowing water to drain. I dont actually recommend this idea because it makes drainage of the water slower.

Youll still need a saucer for this idea in you use the pot indoors.

Why Do Plant Pots Need Holes And What Size Is Ideal

Drainage holes are a way for water to go through the soil and essentially escape through the bottom. Drainage holes help your soil dry out faster.

They will prevent root rot from happening which is really important for your plants health.

Root rot is the number one problem that many beginner succulent growers have. If there are no drainage holes in your planters they will become overwatered and it can create a problem for your plant roots.

Not every plant likes to sit in water all the time.

The exchange of Oxygen and carbon dioxide is only possible in the presence of drainage holes because the air pockets get closed by excess water if there are no holes.

Do Outdoor Planters Need Drainage Holes

There are very few scenarios where an outdoor planter should be used without drainage holes. Outdoor planters stay outside in the sun, rain, snow, and all weather in-between.

When they fill up with water from inclement weather, the extra weight and volume can cause them to crack. In colder climates, that water freezes, expands, and breaks the planter.

Drainage holesespecially for outdoor plantersare key to ensuring your plants dont get overwatered, and that your planter stays intact through the elements.

How To Make Drainage Holes In Fiberglass Pots

Its best to use a steel drill bit to make holes in fiberglass pots. The process will be the same as other materials. But its best to drill from the interior unlike the other materials.

Keep the fiberglass planter on a raised surface so it remains off the ground. You can keep a tarp or plastic sheet at the bottom to collect dust and debris.

Place the drill bit right on top of the marked position and start the drill slowly. Put a little pressure so the drill bit starts cutting through the fiberglass.

Its good if you stop after some drilling and put water on the drilled location. This helps clear the area as well as cool off the drill bit and prevent overheating.

Keep using the drill at the location till a clean hole has been drilled through the fiberglass material.

Why Are Drainage Holes Soimportant

Every plant in the world requires water to survive, yet overwatering is one of the most common culprits when a gardeners plants dieespecially when those plants are grown indoors. Drainage holes provide an exit route that allows excess moisture to seep out after a plant has been watered. Without drainage holes, any extra water collects at the bottom of the pot. When this happens, the plants roots end up constantly submerged in the water at the bottom of the container, making them susceptible to rot as well as fungal and bacterial afflictions.

Allowing a pool of water to collect at thebottom of the container can also keep the roots of a plant from being able toaccess oxygen, which of course, plants need to survive. Another important issueresulting from lack of drainage is an accumulation of the natural salts andother minerals that build up in soil and need to be flushed out. Fertilizersare chock-full of salts and other minerals that are great for feeding yourplants but can be very harmful to the plants root system if they are notwashed out and instead are allowed to build up at the bottom of your pots.

Why Cachepots Dont Have Drainage Holes

Excess water and damp soil tend to flow out of drainage holes for up to 24 hours after plants are watered. Consequently, placing the planter pots on the furniture or flooring could cause it to stain.

You can either move the plants outside for watering or place plastic saucers under the pots to prevent staining.

However, many commercial plant installations such as in offices, lobbies, restaurants and hotels utilize cachepots without drainage holes to reduce the mess and hassle of moving the plants every time the plants need watering.

Since these cachepots are primarily used in commercial buildings, their design should complement the interior. This is why there is a high demand for beautiful pots without drainage holes.

How To Make Drainage Holes In Plastic Pots

Plastic is probably the easiest material to make drainage holes in. Plastic pots you buy at nurseries or garden centers may come with markings that already contain drainage holes.

You just need to use a sharp object like a screwdriver to poke on those markings and bring out the drainage holes.

If the plastic planters dont already contain such drainage holes, you can drill some using a screwdriver or a power drill.

Make sure to mark the locations on the bottom of the planter where you want the drainage holes. You can do this using a pencil. You can heat the screwdriver and melt holes through the planter at the marked locations.

If youre going to use a drill, place the pot on a stable surface so the bottom is facing you. You can place a tarp, plastic sheet, or newspaper underneath so it is easier to clean the fallen plastic debris.

Hold the drill straight on top of the marked spot and start making a hole at a slow speed. Make sure to hold the planter with one hand so it does not move. Gently push the drill so it keeps digging a hole in the plastic.

You can stop and keep adding a little water in between to cool off the drill. This helps if the plastic is very thick.

Once you have drilled all the holes, you can clean them up to remove any unwanted plastic.

How To Make Drainage Holes In Metal Pots

You dont have the problem of a metal pot breaking during the drilling. But it can be tough to drill the hole if the metal sheet is thick.

You can use a diamond drill bit for drilling holes in a metal pot as well. The process is similar to what you followed for a terracotta pot. I would also suggest using the drill slow and steady so youre super careful with it.

Put the pot on a stable surface so you can access the bottom. Make sure there are no inflammable materials around as sparks could be created when drilling through metal. Use one hand to hold the planter steady as you drill holes in it.

Place the drill bit at a 45-degree angle when you start. Start the drill slowly and put gentle pressure on it. This will help it drill a hole in the material. Once it starts to cut a hole slowly move the drill bit so it is straight over the planter.

You should stop after a little bit has been drilled. Then pour some water on the drill bit and hole to cool them off. And then you can start drilling again. Keep doing this till a complete hole has been drilled.

  • Use pots that are not more than 2 inches bigger than their existing pot.
  • Avoid planting the arrowhead too deep into the soil, which might cause undue stress on the plant.
  • Use a potting mix that is fertile and well-draining not to make the soil heavy and soggy. A mixture of regular potting soil, coco coir, and perlite is ideal for Syngonium.

What Type Of Material Is Best For A Monstera Pot

Monsteras will do well in pretty much any type of pot. Choose something thats aesthetically pleasing and matches your decor.

If you tend to overwater, then terracotta is a good choice. Its porous and will absorb some of the water from the soil.

If you tend to underwater, then plastic or glazed ceramic may be more up your alley. This is because this type of pot material will hold water longer.

Metal is another popular option. However, I recommend only using metal as a decorative exterior planter, as it may rust. Instead, use a functional pot, like a plastic growers pot inside the metal planter.

Self-watering pots are a good choice for people who have hectic schedules, travel frequently, or simply cant always be there to water their plants at the right time.

Regardless of the pot material, make sure the pot has drainage holes.

Drill A Drainage Hole On The Cachepot

Now, if you would like to plant directly into the cachepot, you will need to drill a drainage hole into the bottom of the pot.

Yes, it is possible to drill a drainage hole into almost every material of cachepot, even if the pot is made from glass.

When drilling the hole, I highly recommend using the diamond drill bits instead of the usual pointy bits. They have a rough texture that makes drilling more precise and easier.

First, mark the spots you plan to drill. Then start drilling at 45 degrees at a slow steady pace to avoid cracking. Dont apply too much pressure, and most importantly, let the drill do the work.

Regularly add small amounts of water to minimize dust from the drilling and keep the drill bits from overheating.

Which Pot Size Is Suitable For Chinese Evergreen

How to Drill Drainage Hole In Ceramic pot

All plants require correct-sized pots, and Chinese evergreen is no different. You cant keep it in a pot that is too small or large and expects it to thrive.

Therefore, when deciding the pot, never overlook the size and always get a pot that is one size larger than the plant size.

Using an overly big pot for your Chinese evergreen will require more soil that needs more water.

The soil will take time to dry out, and due to remaining in soggy soil for too long, the roots will get overwatered and might even undergo root rot.

You can use a big pot for big heavy plants. You can also grow multiple plants together in big and broad pots.

If you get a pot that is too small for your Chinese evergreen, the plant will get rootbound fast, and youll soon need to repot it.

Although Chinese evergreen plants have a shallow root system, it doesnt mean you can keep them in smaller pots.

Small pot contains less soil which dries out fast, and this condition is not suitable for Chinese evergreens as they prefer slightly moist soil.

If you keep your Chinese evergreen in a small pot, it might grow bigger than the pot within a short period and might fall on a side if you dont repot it on time.

One significant disadvantage of using a small pot is that the plant will require repotting more frequently.

All plants get stressed when you repot them, and going through that stress multiple times can take a toll on your Chinese evergreens health.

If your pot is quite large, the trays from microwaveable frozen meal containers will work well.

This neat trick makes use of something we often just throw away microwaveable frozen meal containers. The curved sides on the strainers in these containers makes them ideal for covering drainage holes in pots while still keeping soil in.

The trays that steam veggies quickly are a great size for many larger pots. Just push one snugly into the bottom of the pot to cover the drainage hole and you have a great way to keep the soil in.

The width of the container also means that you will save money on soil too, since you wont need as much in the pot!
