The Science: How Baking Soda & Vinegar Help Unclog Drains
Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, a base. Vinegar is made up of water and acetic acid, which is an acid.
When you combine these, a reaction happens where molecules get exchanged, creating carbon dioxide and water that bubbles through the clog, breaking it up to create loose material.
And drainage pipes arent pressurized like your typical water system. When you use boiling water to flush the drain, pressure is added. Along with gravity, this pressure helps remove unwanted goop out of the pipes and unclogs drains.
Baking soda, vinegar and boiling water can help clean drains naturally, but you may need something stronger, like Liquid-Plumr, to fully unclog those really tough drain clogs.

How To Get Red Color In Red Velvet Cakes
- Theres more to red velvet cake than just the added food coloring.
- Red velvet is made with cocoa powder, vinegar and buttermilk.
- The chemical reaction between these ingredients help give the cake a deep maroon color that is often enhanced by extra food coloring.
The trick to using our Red Velvet Color when baking cakes and cupcakes is to lower the pH. Some ways to do this is by substituting baking powder in place of baking soda, using a natural non-alkalized cocoa powder, adding more white vinegar or buttermilk to your red velvet recipe, to achieve a bright red color.

Baking Soda On Its Own
As we discussed above, baking soda can eliminate odors, so you can use it in your drains if you notice any particularly nasty smells emanating from them.
It works well for this on its own and the longer you leave it, the better it will work.
To get rid of those unwanted drain odors, just pour some baking soda into the drain.
This is best done before you go to bed since this will ensure that you wont be using the water again for at least a few hours.
You can also do this before heading out for a weekend vacation to give it more time to work.
While youre asleep or away from the house, the baking soda will do its magic, dissolving much of the grease, grime and residue.
When you wake up or return from your trip, use hot water to flush the drain.
This will remove any of the residue that the baking soda has loosened, as well as the powder itself.
Once done, your drains will smell fresher and cleaner.
You can repeat this process whenever needed to eliminate any stinky drain odors.

Remove Hard Water Stains From Glass

The Spruce / Cristina Tudor
If you live in an area with water that has a high mineral content or “hard water”, you may find shower doors and even windows coated with stains from the minerals left behind from water after it dries. The acid in distilled white vinegar helps dissolve the minerals so they can be wiped away. For excessive build-up, use some baking soda on your scrubbing sponge to create the reaction you need to help lift the minerals away from the glass and add some gentle abrasion to scrub them away.

How To Clean A Drain With Baking Soda And Vinegar
In another life, I was blessed with thick, straight hair…that doesn’t shed like wildfire every darn day. This is not that life. Like clockwork, every three months or so, I have to call up my building’s super to unclog the sink and tub drains in my bathroom. A cheap, green method to clean my drain out with no grocery store trips required? You don’t have to tell me twice.
Though I followed Crunchy Betty’s directions to a T, my results were pretty lackluster. On first test, the sink seemed to work markedly more efficiently, but by the following day, the bath seemed to drain about 20% faster, but that’s not that great when you’re showering in ankle-deep water. Sometimes hard-to-reach clogs have to be removed mechanically, and turns out baking soda and vinegar won’t help with fat, oil, and grease clogs , which explains why you should start with scalding hot water. This is why we’ve included tips on how to keep drains from clogging in the first place, along with our recommended DIY process for unclogging your drains and keeping them clean.

Flush With More Hot Water
After the fizzing subsides, wait five minutes. Use this time to heat two cups of water to boiling. Flush the drain with this additional boiling water.
If the drain is now flowing, run hot tap water to flush all debris down the drain. If it is not draining, repeat the previous steps. If you haven’t cleaned your drain recently, it may be necessary to repeat the baking soda flush at least twice.
If a drain clog doesn’t clear after two or more attempts, use the baking soda and salt method described below.

Benefits Of Using Vinegar And Baking Soda On A Clogged Drain
Commercial drain cleaners can be harmful. In some pipes, they can eat away at the material, and they cause chemical burns on your skin. Additionally, if they don’t clear out the clog, you don’t have many options since they are corrosive. However, baking soda and white vinegar are both natural chemicals that you can freely touch and eat. White vinegar is gentle enough to eat at the organic material of the clog but not destroy your pipes. So, vinegar and baking soda are a much more natural option to try.
