Drain Pump Guard Filter
Some Electrolux models feature a drain pump filter. It is usually located behind a small panel at the bottom right of the machine. You should be able to open the panel with your fingers or a flathead screwdriver. Before unscrewing the filter, make sure to put a towel down. You will also need a container to collect the water that comes out.

What To Do First
While your first instinct might be to try removing the laundry from the washer tub and bail the water out, this isnt a good first step for several reasons. Any laundry sitting in that water is soaking wet and will drip all over the place if removed. You might be tempted to grit your teeth and toss it in the dryer like that, but theres a reason your washing machine has a spin cycle to get rid of the excess water first. Bailing the water out is also messy and cumbersome.
Its best to avoid trying to clear the machine of water and laundry before identifying or solving the problem. Yet, it might be the case that youll still end up having to do so in the end. Remember that many causes of an undrained washer can be fixed without disrupting the appliances contents.
Is It The Lid Switch

If the lid switch is broken, it could prevent the machine from draining correctly. The lid switch is typically a small, plastic switch located under the lid or door of the washer. To check if it’s functioning correctly, open the washer and press the switch. If you dont hear a clicking sound, the switch may need replacing.

Check The Water Pump Belt
If you have an older washer, it may have a belt that drives the pump. If the belt is worn-out or stretched, it will not be able to effectively drive the pump, which means the washer cannot drain.
The belt is usually located at the base of the washer and will require the removal of the front or rear access panel to locate it. If the belt appears worn or stretched, it should be replaced to fix the drainage issue.
Make sure to disconnect the power before accessing the pump belt.

Clean The Drain Filter
The drain filter collects threads, lint, and small objects from the wash water as it drains out of the tub after a wash. It needs to be cleaned out regularly, or it can become blocked. When this happens, the washer may not be able to drain.
If you havent cleaned the drain filter for a few months or longer, it is likely to be the problem. The filter is located in a different place on front- and top-loaders.
Heres how to find it:
- Before cleaning the filter, turn off the power and water to the washer.
- For top-loaders, pull the washer out from the wall, and locate the filter at the bottom of the rear panel just right of center.
- For front-loaders, open the access panel on the front of the washer in the lower left corner.
Remove the filter by firmly twisting it counterclockwise and unscrewing it. Clear any small objects from inside the filter and the filter casing before cleaning the filter thoroughly with hot water and a soft brush. Replace the filter by screwing it in clockwise until it is secure.
Clogged Drain Pump Filter
The drain pump in all washing machines is designed to evacuate the water from the tub after cycles of washing and rinsing. However, if during one of these draining cycles you hear that the pump appears to be running but water is either going down slow or not at all, then this usually indicates a problem with this pump.
If it is not working, you will need to take apart your washer to check for damage or clogs in the pump itself.
Unplug the washing machine from the outlet. Pull the machine away from the wall so that you can access the back panel. On most front-loading machines, the drain pump filter is located behind the washer, but check your owners manual to be sure.
Unplug the washer and open it up, then remove the access panel. Look for the drain pump and hose. Disconnect the hose from the water inlet, then check the filter screen for any debris that might be clogging it. Clear away any blockage you find, then reattach the hose and replace the access panel. Plug it back in and run a cycle to see if it drains properly now.

One: Check For Electrical Issues
Assuming you have already checked your load to be sure its balanced, the next area you want to check is related to electrical levels. If there isnt enough power to run your washer, it will turn off in the middle of your cycle.
Washers require a high amount of power, so be sure that your outlet can handle it. Also, avoid placing surge protectors and extension cords back there. The more components electricity has to travel through, the less energy it will have at the end.

How To Test The Lid Switch
If a faulty lid switch is the reason your machine isnt working it could be an easy fix. A broken switch is what causes a washing machine not to drain in many cases. First, take a look at the switch, if its clearly broken its probably the cause of your drainage issue. If it looks okay try pushing it down manually if the machine springs to life and the water level goes down then the lid switch is not making contact with the washing machine lid when you close it.
Youll need to purchase a replacement lid switch from your local hardware store. If youre not confident in your ability to replace the switch contact a qualified technician for help.
There Is Too Much Detergent

If you have soft water or an excessive amount of detergent in the washing machine, the volume of suds may tell the appliances sensors that there is a larger load of laundry than there truly is. In return, the machine will respond to this false information by not spinning at a high enough velocity. You can simply correct this issue by using a high-efficiency detergent with low-foaming actionand be sure to use the right amount based on the detergents instructions.

Why is My Washing Machine Not Draining?
A washing machine is designed to drain water from the tub by spinning in the opposite direction it did during the washing or rinsing cycle. If your clothes are still soaked after washing, or there is water pooling in the washer drum even after the washing cycle is complete then your washing is definitely not draining water.
A washing machine that wont drain is often caused by a clogged drain hose or pump, restricting the flow of water out to the drain. Socks, underwear, soap, coins and hair clips are often the culprits, and will usually jam or even break the pump impellers. A kinked drain hose or a faulty lid switch will also prevent a washer from draining.
To fix a washing machine that wont drain, start by making sure that lid switch has not malfunctioned and that the drain hose is not bent/kinked. Unplug the washer from power and remove the access panel to check for clogs in the drain hose and pump. If the lid switch or drain pump are faulty, they will need to be replaced.
Unlike toilet, bathtub, shower and sink drains, a washing machine drain is hardly ever clogged since there are no solid wastes being drained out. You can however check for clogs in the P-trap if you suspect there is something clogging it there.
Fixing a washing machine that wont drain will depend on brand and the type . Washing machines however works the same way and if you can fix one you can easily fix any other type.

Check To See If It Will Drain With The Help Of Gravity
Find a large bucket, place it on the floor and place the end of the drain hose into the bucket. If theres no clog, the water should drain on its own owing to gravity. At this point, you can be fairly certain there are no clogs in the hose, and the problem is either related to the inner workings of the machine the drain pump, a belt, the lid switch, etc. or a clog in the drain pipe.
If your machine doesnt drain when you put the hose in the bucket, then the issue is still most likely a clog somewhere deeper in the hose that you cant see.
Washing Machine Not Draining Even After Troubleshooting
In addition, always follow your model’s manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations for the type of laundry detergent you should use and for how to properly load the machine. If the answers to these questions dont reveal why your washer isnt draining properly, you may need to call the plumber after all.
While its certainly possible to replace the washer pump, lid switch or belts yourself, you may choose to have a professional make those repairs instead. If the drain is clogged and you cant clear it yourself, you may also need to ask your plumber for help. Be sure to keep in mind that the average washing machine’s life expectancy is about 14 years. This time frame is taking 7 loads a week into consideration. Depending on your make and model, you may be able to get away with a dependable machine for a longer span of time, but if you’re reaching the 14 year mark and you’ve had some problems with your washer in the past, it may be time for an upgrade. This is where washing machine warranties come in handy.

Inspect The Washing Machine Belts
If you have completed every step and still find that your washing machine wont drain, check if damaged belts are the cause of your drain problem. The manufacturers washing machine instruction manual should indicate the location of the belts. To check your belts, unscrew your washing machines access panel and check the main belt and the pump belt. Be on the lookout for any corroded, broken, or otherwise damaged parts.
Check The Door Or Lid Switch

Front-load washers usually have a door switch, while top-load washers have a lid switch, which requires the door or lid to be closed for the washer to operate. Most washers will not drain if the door or lid is not closed. If the door or lid switch is faulty, it could be telling the washers control board that the door or lid is open when it is not.
Both switches can be tested with a multimeter for continuity to determine if they have failed and need to be replaced.

Set Up The Bucket And Drain Hose
Ensure that the bucket is in a place where you wont accidentally knock it over you may want to place it firmly on or between several towels. Then, drop the house lower than the washer tub and into the bucket. If the bucket fills up, simply raise the hose back above the washer tub until you can empty the bucket. Drop the hose to start to fill it again.
If water doesnt flow freely from the washing machine tub through the drain hose and into the bucket, the filter may be blocked, so youll need to clear it before continuing.
How To Manually Drain A Washing Machine
You can do better than bailing out the water from a washer that doesnt drain into a bucket. The process to manually drain a washing machine will vary slightly for a front-load or top-load machine. However, in either case, you should start by turning off the power, pulling the machine out from the wall and finding the drain filter and/or drain tube.
For a top-load machine, disconnect the drain hose and place the end into a large or utility sink. If the water doesnt drain, thats your sign there is a clog in the drain hose that you may need to get out with a plumbing snake.
For a front-load machine that has a drain hose, you can follow the same process. If the machine only has a drain pump filter, put a large towel and container on the floor directly beneath the filter. Then turn the drain pump filter knob counterclockwise to remove the filter and drain the water.

Five: Check The Control Boards
Your control board accepts and relays the signals between different components of your washers. With modern programmable washers, your machine cant operate if your board doesnt function. In this case, you can typically test the power of connections using a multimeter. The multimeter should read that there is power coursing through the washer.
Your owners manual will contain information related to what power level is correct. If the multimeter isnt matching up, youve found where your issues are originating. Typical signs of a broken control board include burnt spots, warped spots, or abnormal moisture accumulation.
Check the wires to see if there is any corrosion as you are doing this. You can find electrical issues in the cables as much as you find them in the panels. If there are any leaks, these problems are suddenly compounding to the point where they are not worth it. Consider calling a specialist for a quote, but you may want to replace the washing machine at this point.
